What is an Elder Law Attorney?

Elder Law is the new phrase for attorneys practicing estate planning, probate administration, wills, trusts, estates and guardianships.  In particular, the phrase refers to estate planning concerning advanced directives such as powers of attorney, health care powers of attorney, living wills, living trusts, irrevocable trusts, guardianship proceedings and Medicaid planning.

Our Indiana elder law practice is devoted to helping people plan for an event that might affect their health or mental competence, or the health or mental competence of a loved one.  Often these matters include living wills (directives concerning end of life care measures), powers of attorney (providing authority to make healthcare and other decisions), and estate planning (providing for the eventual distribution of assets).  If a medical event occurs or mental competence begins to fail such that the person or loved one is no longer able to make decisions affecting their well-being, we can help that family through the legal issues in accordance with the wishes expressed by the loved one in the legal documents that have been prepared.
